Virtual Walking Group

Unfortunately, over the past few months, we’ve encountered many disruptions to our regular monthly Walk for Health group due to COVID-19. To ensure the safety of all walkers and walk leaders, we have postponed our organised walks until further notice.

However, on Sunday 11th October, we launched our new Virtual Walking Group Challenge.
This ‘socially-distanced’, ‘local-lockdown friendly’ walking group ensures that walkers can continue to benefit from regular walking, whilst keeping safe and adhering to the current guidelines.

Group details – Walkers can participate individually or in household groups, to contribute to a group goal.
As a group, we will ‘virtually’ climb various peaks throughout Wales and the U.K.
Each virtual walker will be sent a PPF ‘Wally’ hat, and will earn a badge for every group goal achieved.
Entry fee will be £5 per person, which will cover the costs of the hats and badges.

How it would work – Each time a group member completes a walk, send your Walk Leader an update of the distance covered (kms or miles), or duration that you’ve walked for (minutes or hours).
Your contribution to the group climb goal will be calculated using the following ratio –
20 mins will be equal to 1 mile walked, (e.g. 40 mins = 2 miles etc).
For each mile (or 1.6km) the group cover, it will add 2 meters of elevation.
E.g. if the group walk 6 miles in a week, the total elevation gained would be 12 meters.
Walkers contributions will be added anonymously to a database to keep track of the group progress.
However, this will not be for competition purposes – whatever distance you walk (or climb), your contribution to this group effort will be treated equally.

We will begin with the below-named 10 “peaks”, however, eventually we could summit Ben Nevis, or even Everest!

  • Tonna RFC – 60m
  • Glynneath Golf Club – 140m
  • Cefn Morfydd (Above Tonna) – 300m
  • Craig y Llyn – (Rhigos Mountain) – 600m
  • Slieve Donard (Northern Ireland’s highest peak) – 850m
  • Pen y Fan – 886m
  • Cadair Idris – 893m
  • Scafell Pike – 978m
  • Snowden – 1,085m
  • Ben Nevis – 1,345m

Entry fees can be paid via Local Giving, PayPal or bank transfer.
Please remember to add your name to the payment to enable us to link the payment to your entry.

We hope that these arrangements will enable the group to continue walking, whilst ensuring that every group member is kept safe.
